Australia delays packaging EPR amid calls for clarity and fairness

The Australian Packaging Covenant Organisation (APCO) has announced it will not proceed with the introduction of its proposed EPR fee model in the 2027 fiscal year, following stakeholder demand for greater regulatory certainty and free rider management.APCO, which manages the Australian Packaging Covenant under the National Environment Protection Measure 2011, states that while there was “strong support” for the intent of EPR, stakeholders called for more governance and greater transparency.

Glass bottle reuse systems in Germany require collaborative and standardized processes, rather than limiting bottle designs to homogenized shapes, according to André Pietzke, chairman of the Reusable Packaging Association of Germany, a non-profit trade organization that promotes reusable systems across the country.He notes that simply designing the shape of a glass bottle or jar is often viewed as sufficient for accelerating reuse. However, return, sorting, and cleaning processes are equally significant when creating an effective reuse system.

Amcor supplies Mediacor with refillable pouch for cleaning products

Amcor has equipped Mediacor, a Slovenia-based home care and food manufacturer, with a recyclable and refillable stand-up pouch for its cleaning care brand, Nana. Amcor’s AmPrima 2-Liter Refill Pouch reduces the amount of plastic used to package two liters of Nana products by 80%, according to the packaging company. “The refill pouch is lighter than the rigid option and both can be recycled where the streams exist. It is monomaterial and recyclable in countries where the PE stream exists,” Geoffrey Gendebien, marketing manager for Home and Personal Care at Amcor, tells Packaging Insights.

Mondi has expanded its portfolio with a high-performance digital printing solution, enabling label-free, customized, and high-volume packaging. Komsa, a distributor for digital infrastructure in Germany, is leveraging Mondi’s technology to print consecutive barcodes directly onto corrugated board packaging, without additional labels or manual labeling. Komsa dispatches up to 35,000 parcels daily, making efficiency critical to maintaining next-day delivery. One key improvement has been the integration of consecutive barcodes directly onto the packaging using Mondi’s digital printing solution.

Sonoco has supplied Austrian spice and herb company Kotányi with its GreenCan packaging for Kotányi’s latest seasoning range. The can’s body and lid are made from 94% paper, including 69% recycled paper. Six percent of the can consists of barrier protection. According to Sonoco, the solution is robust and practical for various uses.
Berlin Packaging expands beauty range with Cosmei acquisition

Berlin Packaging has purchased Italy-based cosmetics company Cosmei, expanding its presence in the beauty packaging sector. Cosmei develops distinct, personalized packaging for beauty brands, which Berlin Packaging aims to use to  expand its personal care portfolio.
SIG expands carton packaging operations in Mexico

SIG is building up its high-tech aseptic carton production plant in Querétaro, Mexico. The packaging provider began its operations in 2023 and will now invest an additional US$35 million, strengthening its market position in Canada, the US, Mexico, and Central America. The expansion, scheduled to begin production in the second half of 2026, is expected to boost the plant’s packaging output by 50% and allow SIG to offer a broader range of carton formats. “North America is a strategic growth region for SIG, and this expansion reflects our strong belief in its potential,” says Ricardo Rodriguez, president and general manager Americas at SIG.

Italian multinational confectionery giant Ferrero is reportedly in talks to acquire US cereal company WK Kellogg in a deal worth a potential US$3 billion. The acquisition would combine two of the world’s most popular consumer food brands. Shares of WK Kellogg, the maker of Froot Loops and Frosted Flakes, rose about 55% this morning following Wednesday’s preliminary reports stating Ferrero could finalize the deal this week.

Recycling in Vietnam: Study suggests national DRS to...
Vietnam could divert up to 77,000 metric tons of packaging waste from landfills and cut 265,000 metric tons of CO2 emissions annually by implementing a DRS, according to findings released by the Norwegian Embassy in Vietnam and the Vietnam National Plastic Action Partnership. The study proposes a mandatory DRS for single-use PET bottles and aluminium cans, recommending a refundable deposit of VND1,000 (US$0.03) to VND2,000 (US$0.06) per item. The proposed system aligns with Vietnam’s EPR policies and supports the country’s goals to reduce marine plastic pollution and achieve net-zero emissions by 2050.
