Researchers turn disposable cups into vitamin C health trackers
Scientists at the University of California San Diego (UC San Diego) in the US have created an battery-free electronic sticker for drinking cups capable of detecting a person’s vitamin C levels using the sweat on their fingertips.  The flexible sticker can be attached to the outside of a cup to collect information while the user consumes the drink and sends the results wirelessly to a nearby laptop.

Chinese scientists have developed a catalyst that converts syngas into olefins, the building blocks for plastics and packaging materials. The scientists integrate the water-gas shift (WGS) and syngas-to-olefins (STO) reaction in this research. By coupling these two processes, the sodium-modified FeCx@Fe3O4 core-shell catalyst is said to reduce steam consumption, wastewater generation, and CO2 emissions compared with WGS–methanol synthesis–methanol to olefins route.

Sulapac has joined forces with TripleW, a Belgian innovator in circular biochemistry, for a closed-loop pilot, demonstrating that reusable cups made from Sulapac Solid can be chemically recycled on a commercial scale. The upcycling system cycle eliminates the need for fossil-based materials. The pilot shows that the transition from single-use to reusable cups made from a fully bio-based and biodegradable material can be achieved without relying on fossil-based plastics.

Sealed Air’s US$10B buyout: How private ownership could...
Sealed Air has entered into a definitive agreement in which it will be acquired by funds affiliated with CD&R. The private investment firm will purchase the food and protective packaging giant for US$10.3 billion. We speak to industry analyst Neil Farmer about how this major acquisition could affect Sealed Air’s packaging innovation pipelines. “Sealed Air’s performance has been affected by changing trends in e-commerce packaging and cost pressures negatively influencing the purchasing habits of consumers,” he tells Packaging Insights. Farmer says the supplier’s protective packaging business has struggled over the last four to five years, and while food packaging has performed better in the last year, overall sales were down by 1.5% in Q3.
